NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, the appeal of the Oit.v Club, Gisborne, in reference to a goal in a match deciding the championship, was upheld, lie referee had disallowed the goal believing a player had his hand on ihe ball when it was kicked. THE SOLE CHALLENGE SHIELD. The Civil Service Football Club held a smoke concert last evening in the Brougham street hall for the presentation of the Sole Cup to the club as winners in the Saturday Association competition. Mr. H. R. Robinson presided. The cup was handed .by Mr. Jas. D. Soie the donor, to Mr. Pfankuch, the captain of the team. Mr. Sole expressed life gratification at the excellent form produced in the series of matches, and the evident zest of the players themselves. He commented on the entire absence of rough play even ia the hard and strenuous matches which had to be played before the cup was claimed. Mr. Pfankuch briefly returned thanks, and voiced the gratitude of the Saturday players to Mr. Sole for his handsome present, and hoped that gentleman would long be here to see the cup contests.
Cheers were given for Mr. Sole. A comprehensive toast list was despatched, as follows:—"The King"; "The Saturday Association," "The Winning Team," "Mr. Sole donor of the Cup," "Other Clubs," "Referees Asociation," "Kindred Sports," "The Ladies," "The Press," and "The Club Supporters." Musical items were given as follows:—Songs, Messfs Mackay (2), Melsaac (2), Coates, L. Smith (2), Stitchbury, Seldon, Copestake, Brice; recitations, Messrs Huse and Tressider; pianoforte solo, Mr. Bruce Lewis, who played the accompaniments.
The junior rep. match, Wanganui v, Taranaki, will be played at Hawera oi the 28th inet.
