TARANAKI BEATS HAWKE'S BAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The Rugby rep. football match, Taranaki v. Hawke's Bay, was played this afternoon in fine, bracing weather, and resulted in a win for Taranaki by 14 points to 8. The ground was in good order, and there was a Moderate southwesterly wind. About 4000 spectators were present.
The visitors won the toss and played with the wind behind them. They made rush after rush, but Hawke's Bay put up a good defence. Stohr took a good mark and Cameron, taking the kick, sent the ball between the posts, drawing first blood for Taranaki. A little later play was' carried to Tatanaki's goal-line, but Potior saved. A penalty kick for Hawke's Bay was taken by Absolom, who made a good attempt. The game reverted to Hawke's Bay teiritory, until Absolom, after a line kick, secured the ball and took it down the field, being pushed out. Hawke's Bay attacked frequently until a strong Taranaki rush changed the aspect of affairs. O'Sullivan passed to Crowley, who scored. The attempt to convert failed. Taranaki 0, Haivke's Bay nil. Some of the spectators claimed that time in this spell was exceeded. On changing ends, Taranaki were aggressive, and after a brief change of fortunes O'Sullivan .passed to Pini, who raced down the field and scored easily. The try was converted by Cameron. Taranaki 11, Hawke's Bay nil. Rushes by Hawke's Bay were repulsed. McEwaa relieved Absolom, who retired hurt a few minutes later. There was a scrum on Taranaki's line, from which McEwen scored. Wall converted. The game became faster, and there was some interesting play. Eventually Beamish passed to Siieehan, and he to Cameron, who crossed. Potier's kick was unsuccessful. Kenyon started a Hawke's Bay rush, .iid Ijewis scored. The kick failed. ' Taranaki 14, Hawke's Bay 8. Hawke's Bay showed to advantage during the remainder of the game, hut there was no further score.
The game throughout was fast and both teams showed good combination. Taranaki were especially strong in passing, the fonvairds doing good work. Cameron (three-quarter), Mynott (fiv<eighth) and Pini (forward) played good games, Cameron, indeed, doing brilliant work. Hawke's Bay also showed fine form, especially towards the end of the game. Absolom played a splendid gaine until he received a nasty fciock and had to retire. Lewis, Kenyon and Dorset distinguished themselves. Mr. A. Williams "was referee.
NORTH v. SOUTH ISLAND. THE SOUTHERN TEAM. Wellington, Wednesday. The secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union ha 3 been advised that the following team has been chosen to represent tlie South Island against the North:—
Full-back: O'Brien (Marlborough). Three-quarters: Colvin (BuIIer), Fuller and Fryer (Christchurch). Five-eighths: Gray and Weston (Christchurch). Half: Burns (Christchurch). Forwards: Ridland, Miles (Southland), Corbett, Ridland (Buller), Fitzpatrick. Paton, Patterson (Otago), Sotheran (West Coast), Rodgers (South Canterbury). • Emergencies: Ryan (Nelson), nad Blight (West Coast).
ITINERARY OF AUCKLAND REPS. Auckland, Last Night. At a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Union to-night it was decided to send 20 players under the management of Mr. C. P. Stitchbury 071 the southern tour. The team will leave Auckland by Monday evening's Main Trunk express, seven, of the party being engaged to play in the North v. South Island match next Wednesday. The first match of the tour will be played at Blenheim against Marlborough on the 20th inst. Matches follow at Wellington oil the 28th, at Wanganui on the 31st, and at New Plymouth against Taranaki on September 2nd. The Auckland Union decided to apply to the New Zealand Union for referees for all matches on tour. A letter from a sub-union, the Jlaniopoto Ujiion, with headquarters at Te Kuiti, was read protesting against the New Zealand Rugby Usioii taking upon itself to place the Majioiwtp Union under the jurisdiction of the newly-formed South Auckland Union. The letter stated that ,ap emphatic protest had been wired to the New Zealand Rugby Union. The Auckland Union decided to reply stating th a t a protest had already been sent against the action of the Now Zealand Rugoy Union altering the Auckland Union's boundary without notice or consultation.
