A MAN'S DEATH. Christchurch, Last Night. An inquest concerning the death of John Fontenoy, 35 years of age, unnuri ied, who was found lying near the tramline at Aldington on the night of August 11th siillering from fractured ribs, a broken arm, and other severe, injur'-x', ~nd died in the hospital last night, was iield to day. The Coroner found a verdict ihat lvmlcnov met his death by acciilen! but that there was' no evidence to .-how how it occurred.
SPIKUI) OX A RAILING. Emanuel Trenwith, a clothes cleaner, aged seventy-four years, and living with his wife in King street, Dunedin, met with a horrible misadventure on Tliurtfday night (says the Star). A couple cf Albion cricketers, Guv Pickard and William Johnston, coming from training in the Agricultural Hall, found him kneeling against the railing protecting 11 Wilson and Co.'s windows in Jetiy street, with a. sharp spike protruding from the bridge of his nose. Oil examination they found to their dismay that the spike had entered under the jaw and passed through the roof of the mouth, to find Hb outlet on the nose. With the assistance of Constables Denipecy 'and Johnson, the injured man was extricated from his horrible position, and Dr. Gordon Macdonald having dressed the wound, removed him to the hospital, where he now lies. His' wife stated on being informed of the accident that he had been drinking lately, and had left home at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday.
