FARM AND DAIRY.
Generally speaking (reports a Home correspondent), slocks of butter throughout the country are on the light side, and this is undoubtedly one of the sources of the strength of the market, importers and wholesale houses being comparatively bare of stocks, and are consequently forced to come into the market for their requirements from week to week. Stock in South Taranaki are wintering well, and at the present time are in remarkably good condition (says the Hawera Star). The stock this winter has been particularly free from serious disease. In parts of the Hawera. district there are evidences of early calving, and in some sheds milking has already begun. Towards the end of the month another milking season will have been fairly started. Mr. Gilbert Anderson, who was asked to give an opinion on the report of the British Board of Trade concerning the Beef Trust, advises Australia and the Dominion to adopt the same system of combination, The Americans are turning out the Argentine meat well dressed and in splendid condition, and competitors must do -the same thing.
