" RUBBING IT IN."

HARBOUR BOARD MATTERS. Tiie Waitara Mail reporting the local Harbour Board meeting, Ims the following:— "Mr. A. H. Moore, of Opunake wrote that the Board may have noticed the correspondence emanating from Opunake, which claimed that the last rate made by the New Plymouth Harbour Board was, with the arrears of rates and the land fund, of a greater amount in the £ than was required to meet me interest and oWier charges (wiietncr legally charged to the Trust account, of which they had doubts or not). The estimated surplus was said to be close on £30(10, and the question, said the writer, is what should be clone with the surplus. Clearly if it is used for the payment of interest on the new loan, the ratepayers of Opunake and Waitara districts will have contributed the interest on the new loan, wnieh they should not do. seeing that the districts' are relieved of the liability. Opunakc's share of the surplus is estimated at £IOO, and Wnitara's at about £3OO. The writer concluded by saying that he would be glad to hear the views of tne Waitara Harbour Board on this matter. The Chairman said the matter had been before the Board on a previous occasion, when it was decided not to take action. Personally, he did not think the Board should stir up the matter. They were now severed from the New Plymouth district, and that was good enough. Mr. Jenkins agreed. Let "sleeping lings lie," he said. Air. Chappel thought it would be an act of gracefulness not to worry New Plymouth Board with a request for repayment, seeing the trouble they had met with in floating their new loan. Possibly by allowing them to retain the surplus it would enable the present difficulties of the New Plymouth Board to be tided over. • It was resolved to inform Mr. Mooro that the Board would take no action in the matter.
