HOSPITAL CHARGES

THE STRATFORD CASE. Alluding to a complaint investigated i;y the Stratford Hospital Board, our Stratford correspondent recently wrote: "After due consideration the Boavd found the charges n ot proven, but went out of their way to hurt the feelings of the father by stating that they considered him ungrateful. Now, a person who pays the full value for services, and on top of that is charged £lO 10s for an operation, should surely have the right to complain if he felt hurt, especially as he had lost a son eighteen years old, and his first-born at that. • . . . The British Medical Association is about one of the hardest shellback unions in the world. They stick together like leeches when anyone s'ecks to investigate things." In connection with the above, Mr. J. Laverty, of Ngaire, the man referred to, has called upon the Clthani Argus and made a correction so far as the cost of the operation is concerned. Instead of Veing £lO 10s it amounted to £2B is, Mr. Laverty showed our contemporary the Stratford Hospital account for the operation and the charges read as follow:—"Operations), Dr. £lO 10s; assisting Dr. £0 Gs; anaesthetics, Dr. £4 45." In addition to the above there was a bill from another doctor for £7 7s. There were also hospital charges of £3 12s.
