NAPIER MUSICAL COMPETITION. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The Napier musical and elocutionary competitions began to-night. Results: Soprano solo, Miss B. Handley (Blenheim), 77 points, 1; Miss L. Bear (Napier), 73 points, 2; Mrs. H. Beebe (Napier), 08 points, 3. Piano (Senior): Miss B. A. Horner (Patea, Taranaki), 87 points, 1; Miss St. C. Rickard (Hastings), 85 points, 2; Miss F. MeadowcToft (Napier), 81 points, 3. Vocal solo (girls under 18): M. Baddelcy (Napier), 82 points, 2; D. Shattry (Hastings), 80 points, 3. The men's elocutionary competition wag not concluded.
A NEW LIGHTHOUSE. Gisborne, Monday. The Hon. Jame6 Carroll on Saturday proceeded with members of the local bodies to TuaJrine Point and formally handed oyer to the Harbor Board the new lighthouse constructed by the Government. Tualiinc is to exhibit its light to shipping for the first time tonight, and be maintained by the Board. Reference was made to the great benefit the light would be to shipping approaching Poverty Bay from both the north and the south.
DISTRIBUTING SALMON OVA. Wellington, Monday. The Chief Inspector of Fisheries reports to the Marine Department that last season 238,000 Quinnot salmon ova were taken from the Waitaki river and its tributaries. It is intended to place Quinnot salmon fry in one of the West Coast rivers next season.
