BIG FIRE IN AUCKLAND.
STRAND ARCADE GUTTED. by Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. One of the most magnificent of Auckland's buildings, the Strand Arcade, belonging to the Campbell and Ehrcnfrcid Co., three storeys' high and running from Queen street to Elliot street, was totally gutted to-night. The flames broke out shortly after eight, and had soon increased to great dimensions, the interior of the building being nothing but a roaring furnace. At first it looked as if the buildings on either side, the Albert Hotel and the Thistle Hotel, would be doomed, but, thanks to the skilfulness of the firemen, they were both saved, and the flames by 9 o'clock had been practically subdued. The amount of the damage and the insurances are not yet available.
