CONVICT ATTEMPTS SUICIDK Wellington, August 10.' 1 Solomon Levy, who was undergoing a sentence of two years' imprisonment, and who was recently -brought from Auckland, snatched up a shoemaker's knife at the IVrrauo Gaol on Saturday and gashed his throat, inllicting an ugly wound.

Christchurch, Last Night. Mr. Ciray, a gentleman rider from Auckland, whilst riding Ben Fortune in Ihe Hunters' Hurdle Race Handicap at Riccarton to-day, received injuries which necessitated his removal to the hospital. Ben Fortune fell "when attempting to jump the first set of hurdles, and Mr. Cray was' thrown. At the hospital it was found that some of his rib 9 had been fractured.
