FURTHER PEOi'OSALS.
Amended schemes in connection with the proposed Gill street extension were before the Borough Council last night. MBSSKS JiEKKY & CO. Messrs V. Deny unci Co. wrote, under date Oth August:—"ln reply to jours of the 2nd inst., wc beg to reply as follows: The cost of removal of the stock and buildings for which we have this morning received tenders is, we regret to say, higher than anticipated, and we should therefore, require the sura or live thousand two hundred and fifty pounds sidling ( £5250) for the amount of hind rtnuire.il to make the northern side of Gill street in a line with same side of Ariki street, ami the option over -Messrs Newman and Nul.uiV property now held by your Council. Wc would also require until 30th June, 1!)10, for removal, as it is impossible to remove ' and enru for the stock during the winter months.- In the event of the Council accepting Mr. Mcintosh's amended •offer we would require the same price, viz., £<M (sixty pounds) per foot for the vacant-two' feet on his side.' For your information we enclose what we no-v consider.a.fair estimate of the cost of the alternative routes, which may, or may not be of service to you." Mcintosh wrote:—"Your favor of 29th hist., re Gill street extension to hand, and while freely admitting that the straight street is undoubtedly the one which, should he advocated, still at the same time if the price asked by Mr. Berry for his portion of the land inquired renders that scheme prohibitive I feel free to go into the matter, m JJJ? nOW P ro P» re «l to offer the Council 06ft of that portion of my Brougham street property adjoining his (which will enable them to make „ practically straight street) for the suni of four thousand,pound, ( £4000). and to ae-<-'ept_ in payment borough debenture* bearing interest at five per cent, per annum. I would like, at the same time, to point out that as the property as a whol# is in the market, the offer cannot remain open indefinitely-. I should therefore Tie glad of a reply as soon as you conveniently can. With regard to possession portion is, as vim are aware, under lease with some 'nv, years' still to run. The Mayor, in moving to re-open the matter, explained that he wished the Council and the ratepayers to have the tullest information on the matter, and pointed out that now there were three suggested routes obtainable at a cost of under .-£SOOO. the engineer (Mr. Kendall t guaranteeing the cost of erection <>i the bridge in Xolan and Xewman's scheme not to exceed {IIOOO. Ci. flockrill seconded the motion pro forma, and the Council discuss'cd the whole matter informally. •
