HARBORING UNCUSTOMED GOODS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 0. In the case Collector of Customs v. Cecil Haughton, third engineer of the Manuka, for liarboring uncustomed goods, the Magistrate overruled the points raised by the defence and fined the defendant £l2. An application tor a reduction of the fine was refused. A CLAiai FOR DAMAGES ALLOWED. Ohristehurch, August 0. Mr. Justice Denniston gave judgment in tlie case George Selbie v. John Cecil Manchester and Arthur Shaw, a claim of £IOOO damages arising out of a trap and motor accident at Timaru. After reviewing the evidence, his Honor decided that one of the defendants must be struck out, leaving plaintilf to elect either of the tw.o. Judgment was given for £4OO ag-ainst the other. BAKER HEAVILY FINED. Gisborne, Last Night. At tlie Magistrate's Court to-day, Mr. Barton, S.M.. inflicted a penalty on a ;ocal baker for selling short-weight broad, fining him £f> and costs. A 41b loaf was 3%0z. short. Defendant had been similarly convicted last May. A CHARGE OF PERJURY. Wellington, Last Night. The charge of perjury prefcrrel against the young man, Percy James lievnohls, was heard in tlie Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr. W. G. Riddel". S.M. The alleged oll'ence was that during the hearing of a charge of assault, Stated to have been committed by Reynolds on Frank Johnson,'accused swore: "I was married to Florrie Wyllie about Christmas, IHOB. We were married «t a house, No. 5 Dixon street. I can't say who married us. t still say lam legally married to Florence Wyllie."
Evidence as to accused's statements in the witness box was submitted by Constable Jones, court orderly, andScrgt. Dale. A written statement was produced by Sub-inspector Norwood, in which accused said that he hild falsely sworn in order to protect the girl. Evidence was' also given by Mr. C. (j. Ilodgkiiw, Registrar . of Birth*. .Marriages and Deaths, that no such marriage as stated had been registered. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Hail was fixed in one surety for CSO.
