CUSTOMS OFFICERS' ACTIVITY'. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. The third engineer on the Manuka was charged at the Police Court for bringing in a set of furs without paying duty. After evidence for the prosecution had been heard, the point was raised that the goods were not dutiable and the case was (tismissed without prejudice. It is understood another information will be laid and the case heard this afternoon. A WELSIIER CAUGHT. Timaru, Last Night. John Laing .Smith, described as a "welsher," was charged in the Jlagis trate's Court this morning with the theft of £1 from Andrew Brown, a farmer at (ieraldine. The prosecution alleged that Brown put ,tl 011 Laghmor In the first race at the hunt steeplechase meeting 011 2iltli lilt. Laghmor won and accused denied knowledge of the bet. The defence was that accused acted as clerk to 1!. 11. .Smith, and made no bets throughout the day. The ticket produced by Brown belonged to neither R, 11, Smith nor accused. The Magistrate fined accused Cit and costs, and ordered him to pay Brown back the £l, in default one mouth's imprisonment. CHARGES AGAINST POSTAL OFFICIAL. Wellington, Last Night. Arthur Wiinsett was to-day committed for trial on further charges connected with the robberies from the parcels department of the Wellington Post Office. Vft
