Ponsonby, losing the toss, played the first half against the wind, vhich ended up with very even nlay. Savoury secured a try, which O'Leary converted, South Sydney scorinn- a try. in the second spell Ponsonby "had all their own way and piled up 'the score the locals only adding three puints to the visitors' 20. The line-out work of lonsonby was much superior to v their opponents', and the weightier forwards told. In the second halt tries were secured by Francis, McGregor. Savoury, and Murray, converted bv O'Leary in each case. " " • I
MAORIS DEFEATED BY NEWCASTLE. Received 5, 0.30 a.m. ™ „ . , Sydney, August 4. llie Maoris played the Newcastle team. The latter had the Maoris on the defensive during the first half, which ended: Newcastle 7, Maoris 0. The second spell became exciting, the Maoris playing their hardest, and both sides indulging in rough play. Tuki, by a line run, scored, but the kick failed. There was great exictement when Pnkere, taking a pass at full speed, dashed down the ground. Wikiriwi took the ball as Pukerc was collared and dashed over. The spell was nearly finished and ' a goal meant a local defeat. Tuki however, sent the ball about a yard wide. Newcastle won bv seven points to six.
NEW SOUTH WALES DEFEATS QUEENSLAND. Received a, 0.30 a.m. Brisbane, August 4. New South Wales defeated a second Queensland fifteen by 27 points to 3. INJUNCTION AGAINST THE MAORIS. Received 5, 0.30 a.m. Sydney, August 4. A:i interim injunction lias been granted, on the application 0 f Jack, against eight members, of the present Maori team, restraining them from receiving from the New South Wales League any moneys other than wages due. The matter arises out of a decree granted on the visit of the Maori team last year.
TRIAL MATCH. Unfavorable weather was again experienced for the second trial matcli, North v. South Taranalki, ;played at Hawera yesterday. Showers fell during portions of the game and the ground was not suitable for good football. The-match ended in a draw, each side scoring 3 points.

Fire Brigade, the proceeds to be handed ove r to the trustees of the fund being raised for Mr. J. Bill, of Mangatoki, who recently lost his home, wife and family in a lire at his house. The object is one well worth r of,support, and as this is one of th'e last matches of the season the promoters should have a record crowd. Play commences at 3 o'clock. Tickets are selling freely. THE ASSOCIATION* GAME. The cud fixture, Eltha.ni v. Xcw Plymouth, will be played at Kltlinm ' today. Klthani are leading for the premiership of the northern division, but a win for the local club will also put ihcm in a good position.
