LEASING TOURIST PLACES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Tenders have just been'accepted by the Tourist Department for the lease for a term of five years of the Government tourist houses at Te Puia Springs (North Gisborne), Lake Waikarcmoana. Lae Pukaki, and Te Anau, the success ful applicants and the annual rentals being as follows.-—Te Puia, G. W. Good (of Matamata), £00; Waikareinoana, Miss Hammond and Miss Brooking. £3O; Pukaki. J. P. INVERCARGILL CUSTOMS RETI?RXS Invercargill, Last Night. Customs returns for July show a decrease of £297, as compared with the Customs revenue for July of last, and this despite the fact that the revenue from the importation of spirits shows un increase of £155. The falling off is in tobacco £206 cigars 'and cigarettes £i3y wines £33, goods by Weight (general), £lO7, and "other duties not specified" £3B. The excise duty on beer shows an increase of £25 as compared with' the excise revenue of July, 190S, representing an increased local brew of 2000 gallons.
THE RAILWAY SERVICE. Timaru, Last Night. The Timaru branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants passed a motion disagreeing with the proposal to foran a drivers' and firemen's association. A strong protest was made i against the recent Ministerial use of t veto in the Appeal Board cases, the executive council to take action for the purpose of safeguarding the rights of the railway men.
' / CHRISCHUROH TRAMWAYS. Christehurch, Last Night. During the last month 847.194 passengers were carried over, the Christchurch tramways, the total receipts being £6145 3s sd. Last year the figureß were 861,235 passengers, and £6203 5s lid receipts. The deficiency on the gear's working to date is £365 2s 7d. i Two car-drivere, responsible for the head-on collision in Worcester street recently, have been dismissed by the Tramway Board.

DECEASED PERSONS' ESTATES. Wellington, Monday. During July the estates of 158 deceased persons were finally certified for stamp duty, the largest being James Collins (Napier), £61,294. The largest Taranaki estates were Peter Morrison ;£2302, and John Liddy, £l7lß.

.:,'", BODIES AND LABOR LAWS. Wellington, Monday. Judgment in the Otago painters' industrial dispute before the Appeal Court was ,;hnrt. The question was whether (lie municipal corporations and harbor boards were subject to the provisions of the Arbitration Act. If the principal Act were looked at there was nothing in it to exclude corporations or harbor boards. The 'Arbitration Court had ail along purported to exercise its jurisdiction oyer such bodies. It would therefore require the clearest possible indication to exclude any particular corporation. The answer to the question Before the Court would be that the Arbitration Court had jurisdiction to bind municipal corporations or harbor ooards by awards, except so far as they lelated to officers and servants lawfullv " appointed under section 70 of th" 0«r Yioration Act, and section 38 of the " Tfotbor Boards Act. who were paid a ■ salary' and did not receive wages.
