With reference to the cable message concerning Polar exploration, Mr. C. 11. Ford, who was a member ot Captain Scott's previous expedition, states thav some time ago he received a communication from Captain Scott asking if ie would join a fresh expedition, aim, n not, if he would act as agent for the expedition in Christchurch. Mr. Ford replied stating that he did not intend to go to the Antarctic again, ana tint he felt that J. J. Kinney, who was New Zealand agent for Lieutenant Shackleton's expedition, would be a more suitable representative in the Dominion. Captain Scott stated in his communication that it was intended to get prac tically all the stores in New Zealand. Mr. Ford says that he understands that up to the time of Lieutenant Shackleton's return the fresh expedition had been almost abandoned on account ol Me difficulty of obtaining the necessary funds. He thinks Lieutenant Shackleton's success has given an impetus to the movement, and has resulted in the collection of sufficient funds.
