THE POLICE COMMISSION

MORE CHRISTCHURCH EVIDENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christcliurck, Thursday The Police Commission resumed today. Commissioner Dinnie said he intended to call Constable Wade, when the Commission reached the Xortli Island, in order to reply to the charges made by Constable Fitzgerald on the previous day. Constable Jackson, an applicant for promotion, called witnesses as to his efficiency, among whom were Mr. Hunt, solicitor, and Mr. Day, S.M., Bofch witnesses spoke highly of Jackson's ability. Mr. Day also defended the police methods of finding evidence against "sly-groggers" and fortune tellers so long as they are not induced to Commit offences. He went on to say that in cases where a policeman receives a reward that officer should not be allowed to conduct the prosecution, which should be done by the Crown Prosecutor. Other witnesses in the police forcß and retired from it gave Jackson a high character. Jackson said he had been in the force

since 1892, since when 25 constables had been promoted over his head. Only six of them had passed the education test. He was one of the olde6t Masons in the room, but his connection with that Order had not helped his promotion in any way. He knew no case in which it did.
