Mr. Alfred Crookc, barrister, of Lawrence, ' has been appointed Stipendiary Magistrate. His location, says a Press telegram, is not jet fixed. ' Now that the uaion of South Africa is in hand, Dr. Jameson . (states the newspaper South Africa), lias decided to retire from jiuljlic life, and he will probably reside iji Rhodesia to represent the Chartered Company there. The remains of the late Mr. C. F. Crawford were laid to rest in the Te Henui cemetery yesterday morning. The cortege was a long one, including some thirty members of the Veterans' Association. Revs. l f . G. Evans and 11. 0. Handby conducted the burial service. Xhe choir of St. Mary's Church sang two hymns and a psalm at the graveside, and the pall-bearers were also members of the choir.

News was received in town yesterday of the death of Mr. J. Carey, of Okato. '['lie information came as a shock to men in various sections of the community, for "Jack" Carey was one of the most popularly .known personages of the coast, lie was a familiar figure at all meetings connected with the Agricultural Society, and was a typical breezy, outspoken Irishman, disdaining 1 polish," and going straight to the mark whenever he had anything to siy. He was probably the most enthusiastic member of the large gathering of men who planned the reception to Messrs Connett and King, and lie came all the way from Okato to attend the banquet, whilst his absence must for some time end he became very ill that same after? noon, so that he was unable to attend the function. A severe illness followed, culminating iii his death yesterday. The cheery voice of "Jack" Carey will be greatly missed in and about Okato, whilst his absence must for some time be noted by the regular frequenters of the stock sales in that district.
