A meeting of the Auckland licensed trade was held this afternoon, at which the presentation of £IOOO was made to the late licensees of the hotels (five in the city) which were closed on June
Air. A. E. Glover, M.P., presided, and said he had advocated many years a"0 that a fund should be set aside and added to year by year with the object ot properly reimbursing those who had been unfortunate enough to lose their means of livelihood.
Mr. J. « .palmer, president of the Licensed \ letuallers' Association, said these live respected licensees were foreeu to close their licensed doors by reason of the carrying of that "cursed a:id unjust reduction vote. What had taken place was au example, and showed the rest of the trade that it could be loyal to itself. It was a questiou of organisation, and without that they could not hope to combat tile attacks which were made upon them by heir opponents. Looking at ,tl,e question of reduction, it seemed monstrous that they would be periodically robbed, lhey were deprived of their living and almost of their very manhood. Thev I practically got no notice when they were to close, even under no-license. Thev knew they had to close down six months before hand, but wlieu reduction was notice ™ k"' a ' )oul ' f° ur weeks'
