HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The New, Plymouth Horticultural Society's general committee met in the f Mayor's room last night. There were 1 present: His Worship the Mayor (presid- . mg), Mesdamcs Dockrill, 'Paton, MeKcl- » lar and Russell, Misses B. Smith and , Hempton, Colonel Messenger, Messrs E. W. Griffiths, J. Paton, W. W. Smith F. , W. Sandford, E. S. Allen, N. Allen, G. H. McGahey, F. Goodaere, and A. Hooker. Apologies were received from Messrs Dempsey and Winfield. A ROSE SHOW. Upon it being reported that local rose-growers were anxious that a rose show be held during the coming season, Either under the auspices of the Society or otherwise, a proposition was made by Messrs Sandford and Griffiths that the Society should undertake the holding of a rose show some time iu October or November. Considerable discussion took place, in which it was pointed out that the Society should encourage lovers of parti-1 cular flowers by holding daffodil, rose,' and other shows in their various sea- ■ sous, always providing that the ideas! of those interested were not too large. The motion was carried, and the" following committee appointed, with power to add, for the nuking of the neteesnrv arrangements:—Mesdamcs Standish an'j Salt, Messrs S. W. Shaw, G. Tisch,- J. H. Frethey, J. Gibson, J. Staples, and F. Goodaere. It was further decided that the Society's membership,, tickets admit to both the rose show and the annual show. THE SCHEDULES.

I Upon the motion of Messrs Sandford and Paton three sub-committees were appointed to revise and frame the schedule for the incoming year, and report to a general committee meeting on Tuesday, August 3rd. The sub-committees were appointed as folIow:-iPot plants and cut flowers: Col. Messenger, Messrs Cattley, W. W. Smith and J. Paton; vegetables and' fruit: Mesrs F. R. Pepperill, E. S. Allen, J. H. Frethey, F. W. Sandford, and G. H. McGahey; bouquets, and floral designs, children's and cookery classes: Mesdamcs Dockrill, Paton, Russell, McKelkr, Misses B. Smith and Hempton. COTTAGE GARDEN COMPETITION. After some little discussion, the following sub-committee was appointed to arrange all details in connection with Mr. Tisch's cottage garden competition: Mrs. Dockrill, Miss Hempton, Messrs G. risch, W. W. Smith, E. S. Allen and G. n. McGahey. This committee met at the close of the general committee meeting. Mr. Tisch offered, and it was decided to accept, four prizes, £2, £1 10s, £l, and 10s for the best cottage garden, under the following conditions:—The gardens to. be within the borough of New Plymouth; to be confined to amateurs ns laid down in clause 13 of .the bylaws _ (any non-professional person cultivating his own garden or employing only occasional assistance, shall be considered an amateur, providing he does not. in the. opinion of the committee, make a business of growing for sale products similar to those he exhibits in the amateur class); the area to be not more'than a ouarter-acre section; entry fee to be 2s 8d and entries to close on October 30th; judges to take into consideration, first, vegetables; second, flowera, shrubs, etc; and third, general arrangement and condition.

The judges, who will probablv visit gardens twice during November, will be appointed at a later meeting.
