A STRIKE THREATENED

AT NEWCASTLE.

Received 26, 1 a.m. Sydney, July 25.

The conference held at Newcastle iween the colliery ■proprietors and ship ; ping agents and the waterside workers over objection to ships' crews unloading bi'.llast proved futile. Subsequently ,| meeting of the combined unions decided to refuse to do any further work unless an assurance was given that the crews would not be employed to unload ballast. There is a probability of shipping operations at Newcastle being brought to a standstill to-morrow unless a compromise is reached.
