POSTAL CLERK. ARRESTED.. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Arthur Frederick Winsett, a clerk in the Wellington postal parcels office, was arrested this evening on charges involving complicity in extensive robberies from that office.last January, for which James Hemingway is now serving .1 sentence of three years.
SUPPLYING PROHIBITED PERSONS. Christcburch, Last Night. During almost every case in wuiieh the question of hotels supplying prohibited persons wfth liquor is ventilated it is stated that the present oysten of prohibition is unsuccessful. To-day Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, 8.M., said that as far as he could see the present system was impossible. Counsel suggested thit a system of photographs should be introduced. Sub-Inspector McGrath said he agreed that the present system was impossible, but a great many of the hotel-keepers did not take any notice of prohibition orders and treated them as so much waste paper.
GOVERNMENT BUSH-FELLING. Wellington, July 23. Advices received hy the Labor Department show that there is no grumbling by the 117 men engaged at bush-felling on the Rangitau block. The rumor about men being dissatisfied through being placed with unskilled workers is not confirmed. A few departures have been made for reasons of iiealtn and family.
WORK ON WAXGAXUr WHARVES. ■ Wellington, July 23. . Jlr. Ronaync, Genera] Manager for Railways, promised a deputation from tlie Wanganui Waterside Workers' Union that in regard to work on the wharf at Wanganui preference would be given to unionists.
ODDFELLOWSHIP. Feilding, July 23. The half-yearly meeting of the deleJ gates of the Wanganui Diatrict 1.0.0. F. (MIU.) is being held here to-day. The report shows that the funds amount to .£24,086, an increase of £573. The amount paid out in respect of sickness was £515. Tlie total membership is 1003, a decrease of 44. CLOSING A HOTEL. Auckland, July 23. A petition against the action'of the Manuka'u Licensing Committee in closing tho Harp of Erin Hotel at Ellcrslie, on the groirnd that its action was against the weight of evidence, came before Judge Sim in the Supreme Court this morning. His Honor referred the petition direct to the Court of Appeal,
