Carroll, Acting Prime Minister, in reply to i an enquiry relative to the granting, of Government subsidies on relief funds ■ raised for the unemployed:—The Government is not contributing to any municipal work either in Wellington or elsewhere; private subscriptions are sub- ' sidised only where the expenditure is on national work approved. - Wellington, Last Night. During the past week 223 unemployed hatib registered the names at the Wel- ' lington office of the Labor Department, ■ 76 being married men (with 260 .persons ' dependent upon them) and 148 being single. The number ig less than during some previous weeks, when as many as s * SOO 'signed the hook.. During last week .. 37 were sent to work by the Govern- ■ ment, 20 being despatched to the Gis- - borne railway' works, whilst 17 were • tent to private employment.
