His injuries, which are serious, include a shoulder smashed. The man is in a state of collapse. Wellington, Last Night. John Cuxnming, who was injured by - the race train on Saturday morning, died in the afternoon. • SUICIDE CASE. ; Westport, Saturday. !■ ' Wm. Gilbertson, a single man, aged 49, a carpenter, who was in ill-health, took spirits of saltsi on Wednesday. This brought on pneumonia, from which he died the following night. The Coroner came to the conclusion that deceased's death was caused by drinking epirits of salts while in a state of temporary insanity. KILLED IN THE BUSH. Napier, Last Night. An elderly Maori named Moko Heremia, believed to hail from Taupo, was fcushfelling at Ngatapu, about 30 miles from Pohui, on Friday afternoon, when a tree fell on him. His jnate cut some < of the tree away, but the man was not released till Saturday morning. Moko was then put on a stretcher, and a start was made to convey him to Pohui, but he died in a camp on the track on Saturday night. : . ( V" A CHILD DROWNED. A sad fatality occurred in town on Saturday afternoon. A child namied! ; George Edward Whitmore, two years ol age, living with his parents at Mrs. Jordan's, Gill Street, was playing about the verandah with a rocking horse. The ( mother, missing the child, wtat out to look for him, only to find him head downwards in a water hole, about three feet square and a foot deep in a water feet square and a foot deep, serving the .■ purpose of a drain for the house. Dr. Blackley was called in, and he spent ; about a couple of hours in his endeavors j to restore respiration, but the fact that ] the water was dirty had the effect of j defeating all his efforts.
