MEETING AT CHRISTCHURCH.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A public meeting of business men was held tliis afternoon to discuss that part of national defence which is of most vital interest to the Dominion's commerce, viz., the protection of trade routes. The meeting was' held under 1 the auspices of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League, and Major"Hobday, president of the branch, occupied tlie chair. There was an attendance of over fifty professional and commercial men. On the motion of the Hon. H. F. Wigram, the following motion was earned unanimously:— "That it is-the opinion of this meeting that overwhelming strength and efficiency of an Imperial Aavy is of paramount importance and vital to the existence of every part of (he Empire, and that people of this Domjinion should imake every effort, and, if necessary, some self-sacrifice, in order to retain the command of the sea.
