The compromise indicates that tlie agrarians and protectionists have a tight grip on the machinery of taxation. Out of 25 millions, 1(1 millions arc derived from beer, spirits, touacco, matches, lighting apparatus, wine, coffee, and' 4 millions from railway tickets. The compromise provides for the main-
tenanee of the sugar tax and an increase in the matriciilar contribution to 80 fennigs per head of population unconditionally on various imports, stocks, shares and financial transactions.
