CORRESPONDENCE.

THE BARRETT ROAD BOARD AND A . LARGER NEW PLYMOUTH. } To the Editor. Sir,—l notice in this morning's paper ; i a statement that a movement is afoot i . for amalgamating this and the Omata < I and Hurford Road Boards with the j : County of Taraaaki, as a united riding, Ito be termed the Omata riding. Without wishing to have anything to say as> to the advisability of this movement, 60 far as the other two districts are concerned, I cannot help feeling that this is a step in the wrong direction, so far us the Barrett road district is concerned. Our interests "are essentially united with those of the 'borough of New Plymouth, and I imagine there is no one who does not believe that sooner or later we shall have to become united to it. Why, then, potter with the matter? Instead of the new St. Aubyn district, we ought at once to join the borough, of which this area would naturally form another ward. This is our manifest destiny, and the sooner we recognise this fact and act 011 it the better it will be for us'. Our roads, which now have practically no supervision, would then foe properly cared for by a competent engineer, without any extra cost. Probably the same remark would hold good as to the clerical department. Wo might then fairly expect to have something like decent streets and sidewalks; lighting would be more fully attended to; we should have advantages of several sorts that the municipal Acts give borough ratepayers; and beyond' and ' •above all, an impetus' would be given to the tramway improvement, which • will do more than probably anything • else to cause settlement aud enhance - values of property, to say nothing of 1 making life far better worth living here ! than it now is. This matter is of such > importance to all the dwellers in the 1 Barrett road district that I would sug- ' crest the calling of a public meeting, at • the West End Gymnasium, to fully dis- > cuss it.—l am, etc., B. ENROTH.
