CIVIL SERVICE RETRENCEMENT

THE ROADS DEPARTMENT. In accordance with the Government's intention to amalgamate the Roads Department and the Public Works Department, it is understood that the New Plymouth 'branch of the Roads Department Will shortly be closed. Mr. G. T. Murray, District Road Engineer, has to report himself at the Public Works Department, Stratford. One of the present staff and a cadet are transferred to Strat'ord, and another goes ,to Auckland, the two remaining being retrenched. The field staff, with the exception of two, have all been retrenched. The retrenched officers leave the service at various periods, from three weeks' to three months' notice. Under the new 6chejne the North Island will be divided into three Public Works' districts, and will be administered by resident engineers under the Public Works Department, as follow: Wellington, Mr. J. D. Louch; Auckland, Mr. J. A. Wilson; and Taranaki, Mr. A. Jj. Cooke. The Taranaki district will extend from the Rangitikei river to Te Kuiti.

Mr. R. H. Penny, District Road Enggineer, Wanganui, als'o has to report himself at Stratford.

The Canterbury branch of the Roads Department ig -being wiped out altogether. 'Mr. F. B. Withers, who has been in charge, goes to Auckland.
