On Friday evening bo was farewclled 'by his late Mataura constituents. One of tlie oldest New Zealand comnierieal travellers, Mr. Albert G. 11 Moore, died on Sunday at his residence in ellington, as a result of a s'everc attack of pleurisy.
Mr.' W. E. Spencer (formerly director of technical education in Taranaki), accompanied by Mr. C. Andrews, director of technical education in W,cst Australia, stayed over Sunday in New Plymouth, and left for Stratford and the South by yesterday's express. Mr. J. j. Carpenter has resigned his seat on the Taranaki County Council. Mi. Catpcnter is one of tlie new members, having been elected in November last. During his brief term of office he has been most attentive to tlie duties devolving upon him, and was the "silent member" of the Council.
The gross receipts of tlie benefit concert given at Invercargill last week to .Miss E. Thompson (.Madame Melba's protege), of Stewart Island, amounted to .Cl4O. The committee expects to hand her a hundred guineas. Miss Thompson leaves.for Melbourne to join Madame Melba in August.
Advice of the death of Mrs. WyldeBrowne, wife of the late Lieutenant Wylde-Browne, R.N., which occurred at Fiesole, Italy, on May Bth, at the age of f>s years, has been received in Auckland. The deceased lady was one of Auckland'.') early settlers, having arrived in 1806, and resided there almost continuously ever since. She was on a visit to Europe when she was taken suddenly ill and died.
The Rev. James Kayll, of Hastings, who has been appointed visiting adviser to the New Zealand Prisons Department, was ! horn in Wellington, and attended Wellington College for several years. ;He is a son of Mr. Wm. Kayll, of Auckland, formerly 011 the. staff of Levin and Co., Wellington. On completing his education he went to Victoria,! where.lie studied for the Ministry, and also became interested in penology, through visiting the gaols in that coun- j try. On His return to New Zealand he was ordained.
