ROADS AND PUBLIC WORKS AMALGAMATION.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. Cabinet has decided that the district staff of tlie various district road engineers shall be amalgamated with the similar districts and staffs of the public works engineer, officers of the Public Works Department being given principal control in each instance. The amalgamation will render it practicable to dispense with t!he services of a considerable number of officers, and will also render necessary a partial reorganisation of the Public Works Department. The details of retirements und reorganisation, tlie Post says, arc not yet available, but it is certain that a considerable number of retirements will result, and that the Hon. I!. McKenzie will take over the duties of Minister in charge of roads and bridges. The Departmental districts chieily affected are Nelson, Westland and Southland.
