GUARDS v. STRATFORD RIFLE CLUB On Thursday last the Guards fired the deciding match of three shoots with the Stratford Kille Club at Stratford. Each team laid a win to its credit. The day fvas beautifully line, though the light and changeable wind troubled the shootists a good deal, especially at the 600 »ards, most of the marksmen being in trouble right through the shoot at that range. The shooting proved that there Jvas very little dillerence between the two tennis. At 200 yards the Guards led by two points only. On leaving the ftHlyds this lead was increased to four, and gaining a further eight points at tiOCycls. The home team were very hospitable. In.the evening both teams sat down to a very ample dinner. Col.Sergt. Hartnell, in thanking the clu'iinien for the very generous manner in which they had treated his team, stated that it was hoped that next summer there would be in existence a Tnrnnaki champion shield, such a shield having already been promised. It was hoped that arrangements could be made to lire for it on the same day as the volunteer champion shield, namely, 9th November next. Mr. Sangster congratulated the Guards on their win. Stratford had iried hard to win this match, but felt that they had tn give way to a belter team. They looked upon the winners as the champion team of Taranaki for the .present, but he hoped Stratford woui-.l be the first team to have its name on th e champion shield next November.
