A GREAT SCHEME. LINKING UP TIIE UMPIRE. Received June 27, 5 p.m. London, June 20. The Times, in a special article, suggests an Imperial wireless telegraphy system, It states that Marconi's Canadian service has already transmitted 300,000 words, mostly coded, and would probably increase to live millions during tile coming year. The present average speed was 24 words a minute, and it was likely that it would be increased to 00. The Times suggests Australian stations at Malta, Alexandria, Aden, Bombay, Colombo, Singapore, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Wellington, each station costing £55,000 and having a range of 2000 miles. The upkeep of each station would be £IO,OOO. W the British and Colonial Governments equip lb stations at a cost of £825,000, and offer a subsidy of £IOO,OOO annually, an Imperial penny-a-word service would Be possible. If each station handled 15,000 j words daily, it should be possible to make a profit upon the complete Imperial system of 24 stations.
