UNEMPLOYMENT
SLACKNESS IN PAINTING TRADE.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The secretary of the Painters' Union states that there are no more than 20 tradesmen in the city working full time. 1 here are over 300 names on the books. Between sixty and sixty-five painters have arrived from other countries during the last 'eighteen months, but in the past six months (between sixty and seventy have gone away. SOUTHERN BUSHFELLERS FOR THE NORTH.
Christehurch, Last Night. The officer in charge of the Christchurch Labor Olliec is preparing to send some of tlie unemployed to the North Island to take up tile bush-felling work offered by the Government, as soon as advice has been received as to the number of men who can be placed. The selection will be made from applications which may be received.
SLACKNESS TJf AUCKLAND.
Auckland, Last Night. Enquiries made to-day show that there is a general slackness here in the building trades. Those out of work Jiclude about 100 carpenters ,50 painters, and a small number of plumbers, plasterers and bricklayers. It is stated that about 200 laborers arc idle, and upwards of 50 members of the i-IoM and Restaurant Employees' Union ate nut of employment, as well as a number of engine-drivers, ironmoiilders and others.
