THE HALF MILLION CLAIM
A MINISTERS OPINION. "NOTHING SERIOUS WILL RESULT." By Telegraph.—Press Association, Christchurch, Tuesday. The lion, G. Fowlds, referring to-day to the Webster claim, said it was a very old thing. Webster was an American who hud been a settler in New Zealand in the days before the colony was actually lo.iiuled, and he had lodged a claim for certain lands supposed to have been bought from the Maoris. All claims of this description had been adjudicated on by a Commission, and Webster was then given what was considered his proper allowance. The claim Had been appearing and re-appearing within the past forty years, but Mr. Fowlds did not think that the present case would have very serious results to the Dominion. "You know," added the Minister, "claims have been lodged for land -bought from the Maoris, mostly in the North Island, and the total area claimed exceeds the area of tho North and South Islands by nearly a million acres."
