Dr. Ckridge attended to her and the wound is now healing satisfactorily. 'Mr. Pukcre, the welUknown footballer, was married on Saturday last. On Tuesday evening some handsome presentations were made to him on behalf of tlie Clifton Football Club and his fellow employees at the Freezing Works. On Saturday afternoon last a mixed foursome was played at the golf links, resulting in Mrs. Vaughan and Mr. Kidd being first with a net score of it. Miss Bayly and Mr. fenlth were second with 78. TJKOIIANGi. To-day is tile shortest day, and it may be aafcly said that the winter so far has been exceptionally mild; indeed, the grass is still growing and the paddocks are exceptionally green. Dairymen are now taking their holidays, and the pilgrimage to l'almerston North, which is their Mecca, has commenced. It is to be hoped that at the conference dairymen will refrain from wasting their energies on visionary schemes of cornering the London market, and will devote their efforts) to aiming at practical improvements in the method of manufacture, so as to reduce to a minimum the waste that often occurs either through lack of knowledge or of the necessary requisites.
Mr. W. Ivilnatrick takes over the management of the local factory to-day. A hoy of ten, the youngest son of Mr. IS. Lye, met with a rather painful accident, Having dislocated his elbow. The question of wholesale licenses in the King Country is to be brought before the House. In connection with this matter it would hardly be correct to say that the decision of the Taumaranui Licensing Committee has cause! any surprise. Indeed, the administration of the licensing laws in Tavanaki during the last twelve months has been such .that nothing will now surprise electors. Disgust, however, is freely expressed, and the extraordinary action of certain personages has involuntarily done more for the no-license cause than hosts of lecturers, It is generally believed that the police are honestly endeavouring to bring about a better state of affairs, and bow are their efforts being met' The answer '"ay be lound by a reference to the proceedings in the Magistrate's Court for the last year. The controversy as to the long or short wharf at Moturoa is being watcked with interest. As this is a part of the Wuitara harbor district wc can, of course, look on the question in a philosophic and disinterested manner; and the general opinion, and also the opinion of those who have been closely connected with harbor affairs, is that the Harbor Board is now on right lines; but the danger to be guarded against is that of undue haste. The harbor will b e completed long before Hip farmers have subscribed the capital required for a co-operative freezing company.
