At last meeting the new Mayor I Dr. Xe.wman) made n sUtenient oh the city luiances, ill which he said the loan of Jl15,0(10 raised for abattoirs had lieen used for other .purposes. The following day the oily treasurer' made a statement to the l'ress which contradicted Dr. Newman's 1 incerpretatioji of the transactions. At the meeting tonight a letter was read from the treasurer admitting that the mayor's view uf the matter was correct, and apologising for having made a statement .to the contrary. In vjew of the treasurer's long service, the Council decided to take 110 further action. The position now is that £480(1 of the abattoirs loan has been paid back and £10,200 has *o come iron) the district fund in order to put the loan account in a propcr state.
