THE POSITION IX AUCKLAND. By telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. At a meeting of unemployed painters, attended by forty men, the chairman Stated that eighty men were out of work and that many of them were in a State of semi-starvation. It was resolved that a deputation should interview the Mayor, urging a more -rapid prosecution of municipal work. .RELIEF WORKS AT CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, Last Night. The City Council discussed the unemployed trouble to-night and resolved to start relief work for the most necessitous cases of married men, provided permission is obtained from the union secretary to pay incompetent men less than the minimum wage. It was also decided to. telegraph uhe Premier stating tfiat the Council proposed to start work for the relief of the unemployed, provided the Council was indemnified against breaches of award in connection with, employment of non-unionists and payment of less than the award wages for incompetents.
