HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of members ofthc New Plymouth Horticultural Society will be held on Wednesday evejing next in the Town Hall. We are indebted to the secretary, Mr. W. P. NicJioll, for a copy of tne annual report and balancesheet to be submitted to the meiubcisi.

The report is as follows: "The work for the past year must ue considered fairly successful. Starting with a credit balance of £5 Is lid, we finish with a credit balance of £l2 4s Id, making a profit for the year of £7 2s 2d. \Vo started the year with a' mcmbersiiip -I 95, and now have 127, an increase ot 32. This, we think, can easily be further increased during the coining year if members will ask tlicir friends to subscribe. The show held in Deceiulier was very successful, the space in the Theatr Royal being taxed to the utmost with high-grade vegetables and flowers, notwithstanding the stormy weather immediately previous to the show. Our entries were very much larger than the previous year, receipts from this source amounting to £ls 8s Od, as against £ll lis (id last year. With another similar increase at next show we will have to consider the question of space seriously. The committee regrets the departure ot some members of the society from the town, but hopes that their successors in their various spheres will take a similar interest in horticultural matters."

The receipts for the year were £OO 12s lOd, inclusive of the balance of £3 Is lid at the start. Donations were worth £lO 13s, members' subscriptions £3l, door takings at the show £3O 5s afternoon tea £2 His sd, vegetable sale 14s, entry fees £ls Bs, catalogue advertisements £2, unclaimed prize-money £1 12s, and hire of vessels 2s Od.

Expenditure included: Prize-money £34 18s Od, advertising and printing £l4 10s, judges' expenses £3, wages £4 15s Od, carting 15s, orchestra £2 2s, secretary (salry and commission) £l2 10s, hire of theatre £7, and donation, insurance, petty cash, sundry accounts, and bank charges making up the total of £B7 8s fld. The credit balance is suuwn at £l2 4s Id.

The results of the year are very creditable to the management committee and members generally, and, with the infusion of the new blood which took place during the past year, there seems every likelihood of a continuance of this success.
