THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL CAKRY THE MOTION WITHOUT DISSENT. Wellington, Last Night. The Prime Minister met the members of the Legislative Council in the Council Chamber at :i o'clock to-day, to .bring liefore illeui, informally, the question of representation .by the Government at the Imperial Conference. Sir Joseph: thank-
Ed the liou. members for their courtesy in attending and pointed out that it would he advantageous to hove the goodwill of the Upper as well as that of the Ijowcr House in representing the Dominion. They were aware of the circumstances which had necessitated the informal meeting of members of Lailiament, so he would not trouble lion, members by recapitulating them. Tiro Pmjiier tln'H retired, anu tiie lion. T. Ivellv. in a very lirief speech, urned the nmwiity for the Premier goin"- to the conference and also of prorogation meanwhile, and then moved a resolution, identical -with the one passed 'by members of the House early this morning. . The Hon. .1. Paul, while agreeing with the necessity for the Premier attending the conference, thought the position ot affairs in the Dominion demanded business .proceeding. He brielly alluded to the unemployment question, anil hoped the Government would do something ill the matter. In the matter of defence, there should, lie an equitable distribution of tile 'burden. (jiving Dreadlioughtrt did not appeal to him, as it was relieving the rich of their rightful burden. The Hon. J. Sinclair said the conference was one Of the most important ever held in the Empire. It would he mainlv a seoret one, asid it was essenital .that the Prime Minister should he present. Far too ranch had been .made of the adjournment. It was absurd to say that there could be any loss by adjourning until October, but if there were a certain losVs, he would still say that the Prime Minister should go Home to represent the Dominion at this great conference.
The motion was then carried without dissent.
