FITZROY FIRE BRIGADE

Tlrcro was a very good attendance of ( ratepayer* of Fitzroy, including ladies, at the annual meeting of the Fitzroy ] Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Fitzroy Hall on Wednesday evening. Mr. L. Steele presided. 'Mr. Steele congratulated the district on the excellent lire brigade it now had, and the brigade on its success at the Auckland demonstration. Captain W. Orilliths' annual report congratulated the district on the total * absence of fire*' during the past year. This was- especially satisfactory in view of the fact that the lires throughout the Dominion had been very numerous ( during tile pa*t >ix months. Tin* brigade was keeping in an eilicient state, ' and the attendance of members at practices and meetings had been vry good, benjg 4;W out of a total possible'of f>|)2. A compeliiion wan held on Christmas morning last, when three events were held for medals presented by Mrs, F. ('. Orillith.-. Messrs 11. K. Fvaus. A. and X. liurt and the captain himself. . The ladder event was won by Fireman Aroa. the two-men event hy Firemen Kibby and Old, a,id the novice li\- Fireman Kibby, The team .sent by the Brigade to compete at the Auckland demon*tration succeeded in annexing the five-men j event and putting up /Ww Zealand record for it. This was something for the district to be proud of especially in view of the fact that the'team competed on level terms with every brigade of note in the Dominion. There appeared to lie,.mi impression among residents that the brigade could- onfv reach a (lie within a short distance of a wat"*r main, but Captain Oiflith* took the opportunity of saying that the brijgade could reach any tire within 4IM jyaids of the main.
