TARANAKI RIFLES' BALL

The Taranaki Rifles ball, Which was held last night in ti.e I'neatre Royal, was a pronounced success in every department. Experts in the dancing world declare tjiat there are departments whieh must be properly managed before a ball lean ,be deemed ja success, und they enumerate them as follows: The weather, the floor, the music, the partners, and the supper. Now, last night no one could possibly have found tault with any of the arrangements that were under the control of the committees. There ■were two Committees, that appointed Uv the Rifles from their own numbers, anj the ladies' committee) although only the men's committee had their names inscribed on the programme. Captain Bellringer, Lieut. Lever, Sergeant Joseph and Mr. A. Humphries were the M'sC.; with Lieutenant W. H. Fletcher and Lance-Corporal Blackett as secretaries. To the former of the secretaries must be attributed the excellent management of the supper-room, preventing any undue crowding of the guests with its consequent inconveniences, and facilitating the work of the ladies' committee. The men's committee was Captain F. T. Beli- • ringer, Lieutenants Lever and Fletcher, Sergeants Marett and Joseph, Corporal Woods and" Ward, Lance-Corporals Southam and Blackett, and Privates Boswell and Bacon, all of whom had their allotted duties and stations. The ladiej' committee comprised Mesdames Dockriil (president), Tiach, Stafidisii, McKellar, F. Webster, N. E. L. Okey, W. G. Malone, Sandford, F. Okey, F. T. Bellringer, Fletcher, E. M. Smith, O'Driscoll, Joseph, Bacon, R. Jury, Simmons, Bach, F. E. Clarke, Bishop; Misses Collis, Kirkby, Hoskin, and Okey. Mrs. F. E. Clarke decorated the tables. The attendance of the public was large, both dancers and non-dancers. During the evening lih Worship the Mayor presented to Private Blanchett the wedding ring presented by the ladies' committee for competition on the rifle range, and expressed the hojic that he would make use of it, instead of following the example of previous winners in handing it back forcompet.tion. "If you get married within til" year," said* his Worship in a breezy burst of generosity, "I'll give yon the cake." .And the good-humor prompted l>y this remark was bnt a reflex of the minds of the people during the whole evening.
