WAITARA. T (From Our Own Correspondent.) The following were the eases heard before Mr. H. S. Fitzherbei't, S.M., on Wednesday morning:—Clivc Mathews was charged with allowing fliis horse to **: wander on public streets on 30th April, v Mr.. Townsend appeared for defendant.. " A fine of 53 with 7s costs was inflicted. The same defendant was further charged with allowing his horse to be out on " the Ist May. A similar fine, with costs, L was. inflicted as in the first charge. a James Webber was charged on two in- !jj formations with allowing his cow to f Wander on the streets on the 30t'.h April, '' the May and the sth May. He was J fined os and costs 7s on each informa- b tion. W. Monkley was charged with J allowing cows to wander on public streets on the 30th April, the Ist May J and the oth May. He was fined 5s and ! 7e costs on two informations, and con- ! victed and discharged on the third. Hoskins v. Lund and Frethey. (Mr. Wilkss j for plaintiff and Mr. TowuSeiul for defendant, H. M. Lund). This was a claim ! for £8 paid for commission on account ' of the purchase of a Maori section, it ' being alleged the laic could not be completed. On the facts of the ease his Worship said he could not uphold the plaintiff's claim, and she would have to be non-suited, with solicitor's fee of £1 Is awarded against her. Holmes' v. Tawhanga, claim £2. Mr. Wilkes, for plaiu- , tilV, stated that a portion of the amount had been paid and asked for judgment , for £1 0s Od, which was given, with costs 10s. H. Holmes v, Kapinga, claim £ls 2s Od. (Mr, Wilkes for plaintiff). Judgment for amount, with costs 33s 0d H. Holmes v. T. Noi'thcott, claim £4 5s 3d.. Mr. Wilkes, for plaintiff, stated the debt had been paid, but wished for judgment for the 10s, which was given. Waitara West Road Board v. W. J. ' Thomason, claim £4 14s 4(1. Judgment by default, with 10s costs. Waitara West Road Board v. W. Fitzroy, claim * 7s 7d. Judgment for amount, with costs , ss. In the case of Johnston and Weston, heard last Court day, judgment being given for .plaintiff % default, Mr. Wilkes stated the hearing had been enlarged until this Court day, and the * matter s'honld not have come before the Court at last sitting. His client had a perfectly good defence, and asked for a e re-hearing. The Magistrate noted a misunderstanding had arisen, and fixed a re-hearing for next sitting. R. H. Pigott ; v. G. W. Phillips, claim .£8 3s 6d. * (Mr. Townsend for plaintiff). Debtor ° was ordered to pay the amount within seven days or go to prison for seven 3 clays. W. P. Sncll v. F. Whitraore, claim £4 7s Od. (Mr. Wilkes for plain- '• tiff). Debtor was' ordered to pay the J full amount within a week or suffer I seven days' imprisonment in the New " Plymouth gaol. n Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., paid us a flying visit yesterday afternoon. r On Tuesday evening Rev. W. R. Poole '" gave a very interesting description of the past and present customs of the e Fijians, to an appreciative audience, in ,v the Methodist Church. A large number of slides were shown, most of them being from the lecturer's own photos. , e On Wednesday evening, at a meeting '- held in Mr. Wilkes' office to discuss the formation of a debating society in Waitara, it was decided that such a society be formed, and that it be named "The Waitara Literary and Debating Society." o Mr. H. E. Gilbert was elected president, J - and the Revs'. J. J!. Brocklehurst and F. d T. Read viee-presidents of the Society. '» Mr. W. Wilkes was appointed secretary, "j with Mr. C. R. Stead treasurer.
