PREVENTING EXPORTATION.
STOPPING SPECULATORS FROM FORCING UP PRICES. Received 20, 9.35 p.m. Melbourne, May 20. A Trades Hall deputation asked the Minister for Customs to impose an export duty on wheat, meat and butter, so as to prevent exportation and increased prices. They urged that speculators should he stopped from forcing up prices'. The people reaped no benefit from tlie bountiful seasons. Speculators alone benefited. The Minister, in reply, considered the Government should keep sullicient products in the country to prevent the raising of prices, promising to submit the matter to Cabinet if investigation showed the producer was not getting a fair share and the consumer paying too much. It might help tlie Government to solve a knotty problem.
