FIRE ON THE RAKAIA.
DISCOVERED IN TIME, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. Saturday Night. Just as the New Zealand Shipping
Company's steamer Rakaia was unmooring, preparatory to sailing for Monte Video, Tcnerill'e and (iilirnltor, smoke was observed coming tlirough the Mooring of the chief engineer's room. An examination revealed an incipient lire in the after-port hunker, where the coal was smouldering ami smoking. Steam and water were poured in, and the smoke ceased. A quantity of coal was removed, and a survey made by Lloyd's surveyor. The manager of the I Shipping Company states that the fire was not serious, and was caused by a naked s'team -pipe passing through a bunk covered with coal, which was fired by the treat. The departure of the Ra-
kaia has been postponed till to-morrow morning.
