The [ prize-money was double that of last f year, and a number of other accounts ] were also double ttiiuc of last year. The ] total receipts for this year amounted to \ £Bti 8s lid, and the expenditure ta £B3 I 14s 4d, as against receipts £B3 12s Oil and expenditure £44 l)s 6d last year, i The credit balance for tlii* year is £2 c 14s 2d. A special vote of , ' thanks was passed to Miiss M. Corbett for her services in running the refreshment booth. It was decided to ask the Domain Board to call a meeting, so as to come to some arrangements re making a track and improving the sports ground for next year's sports. Messrs. W. MeLachlan and B. Andemon were appointed delegates to represent the Athletic Club. The annual meeting of the Warea Defence Rifle Club was held in th e library room on Saturday evening. A gooTf number of members attended, and Mr. C. IT. King occupied the chair. The report was as follows:—"In presenting their report the officebearers congratulate the club on its progress compared with previous years. Five matches -with other club* were fired, two of which were won and Three lost. Trophies presented by the president, Mrs. Millar, the vice-presidents, Messrs. Gibbons and 1 W. B. Smith, were won by Messrs. W. B. Clarke. M. Brophy. W. B. Clarke. F. ; Jenkins. and W. IT. Julian respectively. ; Sweepstake matches on Empire Day and Prince of Wales' Birthday were won by : Messrs. J. Colmer and V. P. Robinson. These matchers are the means of attraeting a large number of entries, and it is 5 suggested that"nno'ther match be held: * on 24th May {Empire Day). Staff-, ' Sergeant-Major Dodd visited the club * for instruction twice during the year. which, with having fired the course laid ' down by the Council of Defence, enabled 5 the members to qualify for capitation. Staff - Sergeant - Major Dodd reports favorably on a new range in a more " central position—namely, on Mr. Ayl- * ward's property, opposite the Imll—and as this will affect all members it is hoped that the subject will be settled. The " question of a West Coafit Rifle Club Association has been mooted, and as there * are now five clubs between Pihama and 1 Oakura there seems to he no reason why this should be delayed and competition# arranged. The officers suggest that a

rule he made to the effect that no ammunition be sold to members except for cash, as it i* unfair to the ammunition secretary to have to hunt up members for payment of money due for cartridges they have used perhaps six months before.." The balance-sheet showed the total receipts for the year to have been ;C 14 0s 7d. and the expenditure £lO 10s 3d, leaving a credit balancp of £3 Is 4d. The report and bal-ance-sheet were adopted. The great event of the year here is the Dog Trials. Tt was arranged for the Wednesday before last, but the weather was so very bad that only 12 Out of 50 competing dogs were worked, and the rest of the trial was 1 oft till Thursday last. when, in splendid weather. the function was carried out. It may bv mentioned here that the paddock and appointments for this year were ever so much better than those of last year: in fact, Mr. ft. Marshall's paddock was almost perfect for a dog trial. The club f ,lsewhero took an opportunity of thanking Mr. Marshall for the use of his paddock. The sheep used were lent by Mr. F. Thomson, and the catering was undertaken by Mr. F. Smith, who gave general satisfaction. The judge, speaking afterwards, remarked on the general improvement made in the training of the dogs since last year. The work done thus time was vastly superior to that or last year, and that fact alone shows {he good, yes, the necessity. of holding dog trials iu every -beep country.
