SCHOOL COMMITTEE KLKCTION'S. To-night the annual meetings of householders are to be held for the purpose of electing school committees for the ensuing year, and to receive an account of the stewardship of last year's appointees. These meetings, though having an important bearing upon the trend of cducjliou. th l ' comfort ami well-being of the pupils, and the state of the hchoo] buildings, are not generally largely Jttleuded. There is a tendency, in the absence of a -ehool scandal or.something of that kind, for parent* to slay away, each one fondly imagining that it is some other parents' duty to see thai all is done that should be done in the tlipervising of the school*. The apathy Is not so marked, perhaps, as it was a few years ago, but still it exists. The result may be. and very often js ; that persons are appointed to school committees who have little direct interest in educational affairs, or who ar t . not the* best qualified to act in that capacity. The householders' meetings are really the basis of the school system, although school committees ate often looked upon [ a*> bodies of Utile account. Rut the' ■;Hi0ol committees elect the members <n ] the education boards, who in turn maintain the school buildings, appoint teach-' Instructors, ajij] inspectors.
