THE PLUNKET NURSE.

If any doubt, existed as to the wisdom of establishing it IMunket nurse in Xew Plymouth, it must be entirely dispelled by the highly satisfactory initial report presented by Xurse Warnock at a meeting of the Society last week. We had scarcely anticipated tnat the services of the nurse would have been in M-rious request until example and lime had| lived down prejudice. It could scarcely have been expected xnat the methods and practices of generations could be overthrown, and their condemnation accepted, merely at the dictates of advocates of modern treatment, but prejudice. evidently, has not been a serious, factor operating against Xurse Warnock. ami we may regard it as conclusive that the lime was ripe for the adoption of Lady Plnnkefs scheme. Starting with four patients, there are now twentylive infants under the nurse's treatment, a result, considering the fact that the institution has not yet been established two months, iliat must be extremely gratifying to all concerned. Authorities assure us that the greatest mortality amongst infant life is due to lack of knowledge «f proper feeding and hygiene. To disseminate knowledge and demonstrate to mothers proper methods, and thus save valuable little lives, is the noble aim of the Society (for th>' Promotion of the Health of .Women and Children. The .Society and the Plunket nurse are deserving of all encouragewent, and wilt, it is to be hoped, have riooii so established themselves in public esteem and confidence that their perjiiarienev wed never be in doubt. Better facilities for the convenience of both nurse and patients are urgently required. ad >hould not be difficult of attainment once the public has realised tiic i beneficial nature of the work beng aecumplished.
