TEACHING OF SWIMMING
IN STATE SCHOOLS. Bv Telegraph.—Presa Association. ' Auckland, Last Night. Some time ago the Board of Kduca-1 Uou expressed the opinion that something should be done in the direction ot encouraging swimming among the young people of New Zealand. The matter was referred to the Headmasters' Associaiton, asking their opinion as to making swimming and life-saving compulsory subjects. The reply of the Association was read at a meeting of the Board to-dav, and was to the effect that it would be difficult to do this without interfering with other work. If swimnun" was substituted for woodwork and cooKery for a part oi the year the idea would be feasible in the eases of most of the citv and suburban schools. Mr. 'George said that a number of country schools had taken the art ot swUuniing up as a study. He suggested that the summer holidays be utilised in teaching children to swim. That was the ideal time for swimming. It the matter was held over for a few months lie would present a scheme. Mr. George's idea was approved, and was asked to report to a subsequent meeting.
