BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(Continued from page 3). I ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was presented at last night's meeting of tin; Borough Council:— Streets.—When I visited the waterworks on the 20th ill to., Mr Jlook-r appeared to think that I had not done him justice in not reporting- the exact amount of metal put down by him during the period from June, 1000, to March, 1003. On taring this I expressed my pleasure at his having drawn my attention to the matter and immediately gave him my word that I would report to your 'council the exact amount he had put dtuvii, from June, lilOG, to March, 1008, if he would kindly let me have the 'particulars, I also reminded liini on the following day that he had never up to that time left with me any particulars of tli work he had done previous to April, 1008, at which time lie came into my department, ami I could not be blamed for giving—as that portion of my report implied--a a approximation "f work done. 1 had not received I'ic promised particular-, more than an hour or two wlieu I had them copied out and a covering note addressed to his

.Hi-ship the Mayor, which I beg to ve produce in accordance with my promise to .Mr. Hooker, but it was entirely out «f my mind to do or say anything which might in any way to detract from the work -CiUiicd out by him. In iUTOi-d.uu.;! with instructions to report on the- street metalling within the borough, 1 think 1 <-iinnot Uo tins hotter than point out Unit the greatest iinprovciuL-iil than can be made in the town will for some time lo come lie in the. direction ol sucots, lootpaths,' korbiiij,' and ehiinelling, as tiiere are tit tne -present time several streets in the borough that have had verv little done to them since Sir. (Jih'bon reported ill March, 11)00, that they required metalling, at which time he presented tn your Council an estimate of metal required to the amount of 70!!0 cubic yards, after that time reports were presented to your Council showing that the total amount of metal required during the period from .lime, 1!)00, to Jfareli, llltW, was 31)73 yards, of this estimated amount of metal required only about -ill:)."! yards were put down within the borough during the period t\ „a Juno, llWll 10 .March. J'JII.S, while demands outside the estimates accounted for a further amount of !)84 yards, which were- nut down, thus practically increasing the requireinotns during the period to (>»■>!) yards, and the total supplies laid down within the borough were 30111 yarls during the stated period in addition to 23b yards pill down on the Cleinow lliiild at i'itzrov, Thus the three items of 2033 in the estimates and 1)81 out of the estimates—3ol!) yards—together with 230 yards put on the Cleinow Koad, outside the borough, make a total of 3275 yards put down by Mr Ilook'r from Julie, IflOU, to March, 11I0K, inclusive. The amount oi metal which liar' been put down miner my spervision since March, 11)08, has been 1303 yards within th« borough and 100 yards on the Clemow Koad. There 'are nowover 1000 yards of boulders in stock, which have been obtained at prices which compare more than favorably with previous rates, and several hundred yards of beach gravel, which is a valuable asset for kerbing and channelling ami other work. As your Council will remember, I lirst presented a very moderate estimate of requirements, and in accordance with a later instruction presented a further and niore lengthy list of streets requiring improvement', so that a selection could be made of the most pressing eases and needs.

r -Motor for' Stone Crusher.—l have held over the matter of the motor authorised till 1 could have, the crush r running for certain information I wished to secure, and also to observe the action anil ability of one or two" other motors in town. When I got the crusher to work-Sir Morrison very kindly offered to fro out with me to see the engine, which he did, and kindly suggested that in view of the very iiiiei|iial nature of the load and the large amount of dust to contend with that n motor (if larger size lie obtained, and he considers it would be wiser to obtain one of 30 h.p. I thought I would mention this as it would reipiire your Council's authorisation of the extra outlay required up to a 30 h.p. motor. St. Anliyn Street.—Metalling St.
