The Works C'oniniiucc reported having selected the names of three out. of the lifty-three applicants for the position of borough foreman. A recoiuni'.-nda-tion was made that the Council select one of the three.

Councillor Cattley thought iL wonld be better for the Council to leave the appointment over for the "lew Council. The present Council was ju<t going out of office, and it seemed peculiar for them to make an appointment for the new Council.

The Mayor said the present Coincil had a full knowledge of tha present position of the borough, and were in the liest position to select a suitable man. The Council adopted this view, and the three names recommended by tne committee were submitted as follow: W. J. Austin, Blenheim; A: J. Blick, Wellington; W. R. Gall, Auckland. The ballot resulted in the election of the last-named, he being elected at the first ballot.

WORKS ettiftnTTEE. The Works Committee's report was .adopted, including recommendations' that two street lights be erected in Morley Street, between Barrett and Vivian Streets; that the Fire Board be informed that pending further instructions from the Council their authority to use trie water mains is limited to the area within the borough boundaries; and that the borough engineer arrange -for the motor at the abattoir to be transferred to the metal-crushing depot temporarily. GENERAL. Councillor Hills suggested the necessity for carting metal supplies into town 'before winter set in. By this means the streets would receive less damage, and the work could be done more expeditiously ami cheaply.—The engineer had the matter in hand. • Councillor West reminded the Council of its resolution to the effect that Mr. Xewton King's temporary salt store must be demolished at the end of three months unless plans of a permanent structure were submitted to the Council by that time. He thought the three months had just about expired.—The Mayor said he would not shirk his responsibility in the matter. A list was tabled of 83 propertyowners who had failed to connect with the sewers.—Councillor West moved that it be a direction to the Drainage Committee to insist on the connections being made'. The motion was carried. In the discussion of the matter, it was pointed out that many people could not afford to carry out the work; others were dilatory for various reasons. The Mayor said there were any amount of these people who could well afford to do the work, and they should be forced to comply with the by-laws. (Continued on page 4.)
