THE "HERALD" FIRE
The origin of the lire at tiie Herald 1 olficr remains n nivstcrv. At lu.lj p.m. on Friday one ~f the -tall' made a car.-'-1 fnl inspection of the premises, prompted by the outbreak of lire a couple of mornings before. All seemed site then. At 11.-20 p.m. two other members of the stall' made a torn- of the building on the same errand, turned off the gas at the meters, and locked the doors. They were the last to leave, and they sawnot hing suspicion-'. The destroyed building wit, insured in the Xew Zealand Office for CBjll. and the machinery in the same office for LM7j». The 'damage is very largely in excess of the insurances. Mr. 11. Weston, the proprietor, has arranged with Mr. A. Cliff to commence this morning (he erection of a temporary inachinc-rooim on his section between the Herald office and Messrs. Nargood, Son and Kweu's warehouse. The purchase has also been effected of a printing machine, landing in Wellington today from England, with which to print the paper until permanent arrangements are made. Tenders are invited, and close at 4 o'clock this afternoon, for the purchase and removal of material and debris on the site of the fire.
